This award will allow me to pursue foundational research to develop and test imaging biomarkers in Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) patients. This study will focus on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods including diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and magnetization transfer (MT) MRI to image axon function and myelin integrity, key biologic structures impacted by GBS. The aims of this proposal are to 1) refine quantitative imaging methods (DTI and MT) for spinal nerve roots and determine normative quantitative imaging values and test-retest repeatability in healthy subjects and 2) obtain preliminary data on the ability of each potential imaging biomarker to differentiate healthy subjects and GBS patients.
